Some illnesses are perceived as much harder to treat than they really are. Asthma is a good example.

Six Ways to Avoid an Asthma Attack

1) Take More Vitamin C

"Decreased preference for foods containing vitamin C and decreased concentrations of vitamin C in blood plasma are also associated with asthma." (Hatch, G.E. (1995) American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 61:625S-30S.)

High-dose vitamin C relieves asthma.

Boy howdy, does it ever. One day, my next door neighbor came to my door and said her 5-year-old had scarfed down half a bottle of vitamin C chewables. She wondered, naturally, if there was danger. I asked if the child was showing any symptoms. She thought for a moment, and replied, "Well, his asthma went away."

Robert Cathcart, M.D., recommends a daily vitamin C dosage of between 15,000 to 50,000 milligrams (mg), divided into eight doses. I have seen this work again and again. (Cathcart, R. F. (1981) Vitamin C, titrating to bowel tolerance, anascorbemia, and acute induced scurvy. Medical Hypotheses. 7:1359-1376. http://www.doctoryourself.com/titration.html )

He writes:
"Asthma is most often relieved by bowel tolerance doses of ascorbate. A child regularly having asthmatic attacks following exercise is usually relieved of these attacks by large doses of ascorbate. So far all of my patients having asthmatic attacks associated with the onset of viral diseases have been ameliorated by this treatment."

When consumed in regular, frequent, near-saturation-doses, vitamin C is a powerful antihistamine. http://doctoryourself.com/allergies.html

Be sure to read Chapter 19 of Irwin Stone's book, The Healing Factor. (1972) New York: Grosset and Dunlap. The complete text of this important book is posted for free reading at http://vitamincfoundation.org/stone/ or at

2) Smoking around asthmatics is assault, and smoking around children is child abuse.
Smoking, or simply breathing second-hand tobacco smoke, destroys vitamin C.  Do not allow asthmatics near smokers. This goes double for children. It will not surprise anyone to learn that many scientific studies confirm the link between exposure to tobacco smoke and increased incidence of asthma.

3) Stress reduction greatly helps asthmatics.

The following studies report reduced airway resistance and decreased severity of symptoms in persons with bronchial asthma:

Honsberger, R. W., and Wilson, A. F. (1973) The effect of Transcendental Meditation upon bronchial asthma. Clinical Research 21: 278 (Abstract).

Wilson, A. F.; Honsberger, R. W.; Chiu, J. T.; and Novey, H. S. (1975) Transcendental Meditation and asthma. Respiration 32: 74-80.

4) Keep your back in line.  For you, this may mean regular visits to a good chiropractor. For me, it means yoga, regular exercise, and stretches every day. Easy how-to's at http://www.doctoryourself.com/backache.html

5) Avoid dairy products. Dairy is notorious for increasing lung congestion, and congestion is the last thing an asthmatic needs. Eat a lot of legumes (peas, beans and lentils) and as much as you possibly can of fresh, raw food such as vegetable salads and fresh fruit. This is a tried and true naturopathic protocol.

6)  Look into homeopathic remedies for asthma. Taking lots of vitamin C will likely negate your need even for these.
