A reader says:

I just wanted to send you a sincere thank you for the information you have given me to fight my depression and anxiety the natural way. I’m twenty years old now, but my depression started when I was in seventh grade. I went to the doctor at age eighteen and I was diagnosed with bipolar, depression, and anxiety. I was on Lamictal and Wellbutrin for two years, and I just wasn’t seeing any improvement. I weaned myself off the medicine and found myself feeling even worse for the next year. Two weeks ago I changed my life. In the past two weeks I’ve changed my diet to mostly raw foods, and started taking a multivitamin, B12, and 300 milligrams of niacin a day. I feel like the person I’ve always wanted to be. I went out last week for the first time in a year. I’ve literally been too scared to leave the house, being bombarded with terrible social anxiety. It’s all gone away. I feel more productive and energized then I ever have in my life. I just wish I would have found out sooner, and not had to suffer for the last eight years. Thank you for changing my outlook on life.

AN EXCERPT FROM THE VITAMIN CURE FOR DEPRESSION:

You may consider me a wounded healer. Yes, I have worked with a considerable number of depressed people. I also have personally been through the depths of depression.

I recall (and am unlikely to forget) the very day and hour that I bottomed out. One hesitates to say that things cannot get worse, because perhaps they always can. But on that particular day in 1996, I simply could not go any lower. What did I do? I did what is now contained in this book. It worked for me. It was not instant success, it was not absolute success, and it certainly was not effortless success. It simply worked, and the more I did it the better things got.

There is no monotherapy, no single magic bullet, for depression. It would be nice to make this book into a little pamphlet directing you to a single pill that you could take, get quickly cured, and be done with it. Such a tablet does not exist. There is no one drug, or cocktail of drugs, that will do the trick. Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., said, “Drugs make a well person sick. Why would they make a sick person well?” He added, based on his fifty-five years of psychiatric research and practice, that drug-only cure rates are about 10 percent. Optimum nutritional therapy (orthomolecular medicine) and related measures, Dr. Hoffer said, will get you an 80 percent cure rate. I like those odds.

One of the problems with depression drug therapy is that it is successful . . . for a while. Many a Prozac’ed patient will report swift and genuine improvement. Yet maintained selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drug use can be reliably expected to cause problems down the road. This applies to antidepressant drugs in general. The bloom is off the rose all too often, as the patient reports decreasing benefit and increasing side effects. This book offers a serious alternative. You are going to hear more of my personal story later in Chapter 11. First, we are going to present what we think will help you to better understand what depression is, why you feel the way you do, and especially what you can do about it using nutritional methods. As actress Margot Kidder said so well, “You can fix your brain with nutrition.”

What we focus on in this book are nutritional treatments for depression. They are remarkably simple, safe, and easy to try. This does not mean that nutrition and depression and medicine are simple subjects. You do not need to know it all to get good results. Automobiles are very complex, yet you do not even need a high school diploma to operate one safely and efficiently. The human body is unbelievably complex, yet there are certain key areas of opportunity that are straightforward and doable. The odd thing is that so many people suffering from depression have never been encouraged, or even informed, about nutritional (orthomolecular) medicine. We’d like to fix that right now.

There is no way I would ever go to a casino unless they let me use my own cards. They will not, of course. Still, I would never place a bet unless I could stack the deck. To do so, you do not need to know how to manufacture playing cards, or the mathematical theorems of probability, or even be honest. However, you do need good technique. To beat depression, you need to stack the deck. Nutritional therapy is a really good technique. We want to show you how to use it.
