"Do not let either the medical authorities or the politicians mislead you. Find out what the facts are, and make your own decisions about how to live a happy life and how to work for a better world." (Linus Pauling, in How to Live Longer and Feel Better, p. 274)

The DOCTOR YOURSELF NEWSLETTER (Vol 3, No 2) December 5, 2002

"Free of charge, free of advertising, and free of the A.M.A." Written by Andrew Saul, PhD. of http://www.doctoryourself.com , a free online library of over 350 natural healing articles with nearly 4,000 scientific references.

AN ALMOST-OVERNIGHT CURE FOR HERPES "Can you suggest for genital herpes? My doctor says there is no cure." K.D., Stockholm, Sweden

"No cure " is an absolute statement. There may be no pharmaceutical cure; there may be no medical cure; there may be no well-publicized cure. Before you resign yourself to accepting painful and otherwise problematic herpes lesions as your lot for life, try this:

Make a paste with vitamin C powder and a little water and apply it directly to external herpes lesions. Ascorbic acid works best, in my opinion, but may smart a bit. Calcium ascorbate is non-acidic and is "ouchless." You will find a significant reduction in both discomfort and in size overnight. If the lesions were fluid-filled (that liquid is loaded with viruses), you will notice that the lesions are drier. For lesions that have broken and fluid leaked out, apply the paste not only on, but liberally AROUND the whole area. Sure, when the vitamin C paste dries, you will see a slight white "frost." But no big deal. It sure looks better than a herpes sore. Repeat this process twice daily until the skin is completely healed.

Is herpes contagious? Yes. Use all cautions that you have learned to avoid spreading it. If you don't know them, read up on the subject. That is what Google searches and public libraries are there for.

GENITAL HERPES Lowered resistance can trigger an outbreak of latent herpes viruses. Marta, age 30, was in her sixth month of a long-desired pregnancy. She came to consult with me specifically because of genital herpes. Her obstetrician had correctly told her that she could not deliver vaginally as long as there were active lesions. Exposure to herpes constitutes a real danger to a newborn. The doctor had said that if the lesions were inactive, and preferably gone, for a period of so many weeks, he'd OK a natural delivery. Otherwise, it would be a Cesarean for her.

Her question was expected.

"Is there any way to get rid the lesions with nutrition?" Marta asked.

For my answer (and in this case it was NOT topical application), please look at the second half of the article posted at http://www.doctoryourself.com/vitaminc2.html

"A topical C-paste has been found very effective in the treatment of herpes simplex and, to a lesser extent, in the treatment of some Kaposi's lesions."

Shingles (Herpes Zoster) also responds to megavitamin C therapy: http://www.doctoryourself.com/vitaminc.html

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) can be treated very well (and very quickly) with topical vitamin C paste therapy.

READERS ASK: "Is coral calcium as good as claimed?"

Not really. A well-written critical review is posted at

BLADDER INFECTIONS J. M writes: "I tend to have frequent bladder and urinary tract infections. I have in the past gone down the antibiotic road but that messed up my normal bacteria and digestion. Do you have any suggestion other than antibiotics or sulfa drugs to relieve this problem?"

If I were in your position, I would immediately begin taking 500 mg of vitamin C every 6 minutes by the clock. That is not a typo. I would continue to do so all day until you reach bowel tolerance. The links below give more specific instructions. If the slight acidity of the C bothers your stomach at all, a fraction of a calcium tablet will buffer each dose. http://www.doctoryourself.com/titration.html http://www.doctoryourself.com/ortho_c.html http://www.doctoryourself.com/klenner_table.html http://www.doctoryourself.com/klennerpaper.html

I would also recommend frequent fresh vegetable juicing, or at least drinking a large volume of water. If the condition does not resolve in a few days, see your doctor.

ALLERGIC TO VITAMIN C? P. R. writes: "I have a sister-in-law who says she can't take vitamin C because she's allergic to it. Is this possible?"

Naw. All people (at least all living people) need vitamin C. So it is not an allergy but rather a sensitivity either 1) to the ingredients in the tablet or 2) to the acidity. Solutions to both problems are posted at http://www.doctoryourself.com/tabtaking.html http://www.doctoryourself.com/labels.html

NY STATE CONTINUES TO PROSECUTE (OR IS THAT PERSECUTE?) JENNIFER DANIELS, M.D., M.B.A.

(Editor's Note: Dr. Jennifer Daniels is a graduate of Harvard University (Cum Laude), the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Wharton Business School. She was Board Certified in Family Practice, a member in good standing of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Practice. In 10 years of medical practice, she has received numerous commendations, including one from the Governor. She had no malpractice cases or complaints in those 10 years. Here follows, in her own words, how the State took away her medical license for treating patients with nutrition and common sense, instead of with drugs.)

"In 1999, the NY State Health Department began an investigation of me and requested a patient's records. I gave them the records. They then said that they wanted to see the records of the 4,000 patients who had seen me over the prior 10 years because this case represented a pattern of "inappropriate" (that is, "natural") practice. I refused the search because it was not a pattern, only one case. The Health Department then changed the reason to one case of "negligence or incompetence." I refused because the therapy was effective, therefore this case could not be a case of negligence or incompetence. The Health Department then changed the charges to "non-cooperation" because I refused to allow them to see the charts of 4,000 patients unrelated to the initial case.

"I have retained numerous attorneys. The State threatened one of my attorneys and told her that they would investigate her and fine her or remove her license if she filed any legal action on my behalf. She resigned. Photographs and an eyewitness affidavit then became available indicating that the complaint was false. I was subjected to a one-day hearing and allowed no witnesses. A copy of the patient chart as well as the evidence that the complaint was false was excluded from the hearing. I was convicted of non- cooperation. The penalty by law is a letter of warning. I received a license suspension. A suspension by law should be finite. Mine is forever. The law states that the Health Department has no jurisdiction to investigate therapy that is effective; I was investigated anyway. Case law says the State may not use a false complaint as a basis for an investigation. The complaint is false, yet I was investigated. The prosecutor in my case, with the cooperation of the judge, suppressed exculpatory evidence. This is prosecutorial misconduct.

"Here I am, a 45-year-old single, unemployed mother of three children aged 9, 12,and 15. If I had been a mother sooner, the children would be grown by now and I would be better off. Instead, I borrowed money and spent 14 years of my youth getting an education only to practice medicine for 10 years and have my license taken away without cause.

"My license was suspended 18 months ago. Then, I was the last African American solo family practice physician in the Syracuse area. My medical practice was located in a medically underserved ghetto. Now it is closed.

"I feel it is important to let you know that my situation is the very reason that competent physicians are hard to find, and the reason why doctors refuse to listen to their patients or offer options. You are invited to contact me."

VITAMIN TOLERANCE? S. C. writes: "I was wondering if you could take the same brand of multivitamin for a long period of time without it becoming less effective over time. Or, should you switch brands every so often?"

Your body needs vitamins every day. Alternating brands is completely unnecessary. It is quantity and quality that matter, especially quantity. http://www.doctoryourself.com/synthetic.html

FREE VITAMIN DISPENSARY Approximately half of poor persons coming in for a free meal at St. Joseph's House of Hospitality in Rochester are now choosing to take the high-potency multiple vitamin offered to all of them daily. That is a good response rate.

We thank Lori's Natural Foods http://www.lorisnatural.com for their recent generous donation of multiples, children's chewable vitamins, and vitamin C tablets. If you or your company would like to donate money or products, please email me at doctoryourself.com/contact.html . We welcome all the help we can get, and need it now especially with winter upon us.

ACNE If I had a buck for every "how do I clear up my face" letter, I'd be loaded. (Those readers who think that, based on how I write, that I must already be at least half loaded, should look at http://www.doctoryourself.com/alcoholism.html and http://www.doctoryourself.com/alcohol_protocol.html )

Let's "face" it: If there were an effective, and safe, true magic bullet for acne, you'd already know about it. You can be sure that the drug companies are looking hard for a lucrative chemical cure to what is a lifestyle and nutritional problem. The true solution to acne is holistic, systemic, and ecological. A previous Newsletter ( http://www.doctoryourself.com/news/v2n17.txt ) contains an article on skin care, plus links which I think are worth your attention.

CHRONIC DEPRESSION R. B. writes "I am really glad there are intelligent people out there that understand 'the other side of medicine'. I have helped myself greatly with large doses of vitamin C. I have stopped my chronic depression just with B100's, three times a day. It is dramatic. Even my acne cleared up. The articles by Dr. Hoffer were very enlightening. Most of the information I find on vitamins is too superficial. He answered a lot of my questions. Thank you."

MORE APPRECIATION FOR DR. HOFFER:

"Dr. Abram Hoffer has been a MEGA influence in my life of some 70 odd years.

"I worked as a social worker many years ago in Department of Public Social Service in Los Angeles County, CA. At that time I was on "ATD" (Aid to Totally Disabled) service. We would have once-a-week meetings with a local psychiatrist and all the ATD workers. It was that way that I was introduced to Dr. Hoffer's ideas. I was very interested and went to the library where I read HOW TO LIVE WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA by Dr. Hoffer. What an eye opener!

"From then on, I have followed the research on mega-vitamins, and Orthomolecular medicine and have since read more books by Dr. Hoffer ( http://www.doctoryourself.com/biblio_hoffer.html ) My health, I feel, has been a direct result of this knowledge. I am especially a vitamin C advocate but it does not stop there. I try to spread the word whenever and wherever I can. I have an R.N. background so there was much to unlearn as there was to learn!

"I want to add my voice of gratitude for Dr. Hoffer's work and to wish him a very happy 85th birthday."

Most sincerely, Barbara Macdonald

ROOT CANALS M. M. writes: "What do you recommend as an alternative to a root canal?"

I know of no true option to a necessary root canal. I do have three important suggestions:

1) To be sure you really need a root canal, get a second, or third, opinion (and not from me, as I am not a dental surgeon).

2) Prevent your needing any MORE root canals by frequently flossing, using interdental cleaning sticks, and taking a lot of gum-strengthing, tartar-reducing vitamin C. Scrupulously avoid sugar. Eliminate all carbonated "soft drinks," all of which contain acid (carbonic and phosphoric) and are very "hard" on the teeth. Instead, eat a good, natural, mineral-rich diet. If these steps do not appeal to you, start saving your money. You'll need it. http://www.doctoryourself.com/gums.html http://www.doctoryourself.com/teeth_tooth.html

3) Take an enormous amount of vitamin C, both before and especially after the procedure to reduce post-op infection, pain, and to promote speedy recovery.

FACIAL WRINKLES "Cigarette smoking is a direct cause of premature facial wrinkling, and increased pack/years of smoking heighten the effect."
